King Street's Annual Holiday Dinner Hosted by the Windjammer

On Monday, December 8, the staff of the Windjammer brought their restaurant to King Street Youth Center, volunteering their time and skills to host a holiday dinner for King Street Youth Center children and families.

The staff of the Windjammer has reached out to the King Street community by hosting this holiday party for the past eighteen years. The dinner provides a special evening out for families who might not otherwise have the opportunity during the holiday season.

This year’s dinner was highlighted by a visit from Champ of the Vermont Lakemonsters, who entertained the guests and volunteers alike. Members of the Green Mountain Glades Junior Hockey Team also volunteered their time, helping with set-up and serving dinner.

Animation Takes Over

In the homework room this week, we've started to explore animation using Aniboom's Shapeshifter freeware. First, I made an animation for the afterschoolers to look at:

Then, the afterschoolers took over. Saul made a Transformer.

Ahmed made a "Cool Guy". Note the baseball hat. That's what makes him cool.

Najma made a princess (I helped a little).

Anna made this angry princess (I didn't help with this one at all).

We welcome various materials such as: styrofoam, dryer and other hoses, glittery items, bottle caps for buttons, white buckets for helmets, cardboard, silver colored cloth, duct tape. You’ll think of lots more. Think of us when you start spring cleaning.

Please call Peggy at King Street to arrange dropping off a donation.

The bad guy lives in the volcano, and he can control the fire. He's a scientist. The police came to stop him, and the bad guy wants to destroy teh world. The police are trying to save the town. The blue monster is another bad guy who lives in the volcano. They're friends, and so is the snake. He's below the blue monster, trying to capture the good guy.

Comics

Comics are VERY big right now in the Homework room, especially when they can be scanned into the computer and then edited.

Give a kid a microphone . . .

Ciana wrote this song to accompany her picture. Mostly, though, she was interested in recording her voice and playing back the music.

Photos of Drumming with Mashobane

Here's another excerpt from our day of drumming. All photos were taken by Becca, age 8, and all audio was recorded by Cheyanne, age 12.

Rehearsal for the 2008 Talent Extravaganza

A group of Afterschoolers and Teens joined Mashobane to practice African drumming on Wednesday. Mashobane says that the group is "learning to bring a rythm to life with the feeling of togetherness." This video was shot by Becca, age 8.

This group is just one of the groups that will perform in King Street's Talent Extravaganza on February 16th. The Talent Extravaganza gives local youth and mentors a chance to creatively work and perform together. The show will feature drumming, singing, acting, a magic show and lots of other local talent. For more information, see http://www.kingstreetyouth.org/events.htm
