Marathon

I'm not going to lie - as a 4-time marathoner, the Youth Relay Team is just about my favorite activity we do at King Street. Oh sure, I love technology and tutoring, but slip on a pair of sneakers and have a run on the bikepath with a teen? Perfect.

And perfect is just about the best way to describe Sunday's run. Well, minus the rain and the heat and the humidity, but really, we didn't even notice it. Some shots from our day:

Alex, our assistant coach, and Mohamed, who ran the 3rd leg (And I quote, "You didn't tell me it would be so LONG! I kept running and running, and I thought it would never end!"):
Arden, our official baby-mascot for the day:Me, waiting for at the finish:
Abdi, just after finishing the 5th leg, right around 11:30:
And, four very tired runners, enjoying their post-race creemees!

King Street's UVM Grad!

If you subscribe to the King Street Center online newsletter, then you know that long-time King Street attendee Josh Bennett graduated from UVM this past Saturday.

Well, we couldn't let THAT pass without a party, now could we? Here, a few images from the big day.

KSC Executive Director Vicky Smith reading a note from former E.D. Roxane Leopold:
A line of folks celebrating Josh's success:
Aida (who is taking college courses herself!):
Mmmmmm . . . celebratory cake.
A present for Josh:
And here's the present!

Speed Stacking

Mark Johnson volunteers in the Tech Room every Monday. He always brings these amazing games - tops, ball-in-a-cup, this card game where you match patterns that's so complicated that only the kids are really good at it. Well, this week, Mark brought some speed stackers, and we had soooooo much fun with them.

Semplise mostly wanted to hide tops under the cups:
Neema was interested in stacking quickly:
Look at that concentration:
And then, we were also interested in building really tall stacks:
And the best part? Frank, one of the teens, showed us what he can do . . . and he's REALLY fast!

Kids Lemonade at the Clothes Exchange!

Clothes Exchange shoppers and volunteers enjoyed delicious, refreshing Kids Lemonade at last night's event. Frank and Lule were pros!

They made...

poured...

and served!

A big thank you to Lule and Frank, and to everyone at the Clothes Exchange--a portion of the event's proceeds will benefit King Street.

Mmmmm....looking forward to more Kids Lemonade this summer!

Day One: Arthur Ashe

Every spring, the youth of King Street learn about Arthur Ashe and they ways he promoted sportsmanship, equality, and academics. Then, they participate in the NJTL Arthur Ashe Essay and Art Contest.

Below, we've compiled some resources for youth to use when considering their answers to this year's question, "Why do you think Arthur Ashe created teh National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) network, and how has your NJTL Chapter impacted your life?"

Here, Arthur Ashe does the alphabet on Sesame Street!

Love that Photo Editing!

There are few things more fun than letting the Afterschoolers edit photos of themselves!

Hoopapalooza

Our Hoopers are competing in THIS Saturday's Hoopapalooza event and they'd love for you to come cheer them on! The event starts at 9 at City Hall Park (which means that, if you're at the first outdoor Farmer's Market of the summer, you should definitely stop by!). If it rains, the event's still on, but it'll be in the Edmunds Gym.
